PERSONAL CARE ATTENDANT / CAREGIVER

Position Summary: 
The Personal Care Attendant / Caregiver (PCA) is a front line position acting as a representative for COMPANION CARE SERVICES and providing the services offered by the company that contributes to the client’s personal comfort and safety in the home.  The PCA duties are not limited to those listed as the position has a wide scope of duties at times dependent on the client and always under the direction of the company and must report changes immediately to the office.  The PCA will mostly work independently of co-workers or supervisors in client homes and work sites outside of the client home as required and therefore must balance good judgment and initiative along with the policies of the company.

Accountable to:  COMPANION CARE SERVICES Owner, Director, Administrator, Manager, and/or Supervisor.

Work Hours: Position may require various shifts at various times (including nights, weekends, and Live-in shifts.

Duties:  The following list of duties is a guideline of possible duties to be performed independently or as a group of duties in the course of working with the client.  Emphasis is for the PCA to involve the client in the care program to help provide the client with the basic standards of healthy living through physical activity, nutrition, mental stimulation, relaxation, personal contact, and humor.  COMPANION CARE SERVICES PCA duties are to provide, but is not limited to the following services:

Companionship

One of the most important aspects of COMPANION CARE SERVICES will be providing customers with a strong sense of self-esteem and independence.  Taking a genuine interest in the client, their life, and their environment will help create a true sense of companionship.  Whether it is playing a favorite board game or card game, reading, taking a stroll or visiting with friends and neighbors, companionship provides the depth of our services.

Housekeeping, Laundry, and Pet Care – (to be limited to 20% of time worked per shift)

The PCA will provide dusting, vacuuming carpets and furniture, changing bedding, scrubbing the bathroom; pre-washing, washing, drying, ironing and folding laundry; caring for house plants; taking out the garbage and general tidying of living spaces as required or requested. It also includes caring for pets including feeding, exercising, walking, playing, cleaning up after the pet.

Personal Care

This includes knowing and following infection control policies including proper hand washing techniques while assisting with grooming needs such as hair care, cleaning teeth/dentures; supervising or assisting with tub baths, showers, sponge baths, and bed baths; assisting with dressing and undressing; assisting with mobilization activities including turning, transferring, exercising, and walking; assisting with toilet and/or commode needs; assisting with eating or feeding.  Must have the ability to sit, walk, stand, stoop, turn, pivot and reach without restrictions and to use proper body mechanics.  You must also have the ability to push, pull and lift up to 50 pounds when performing client care duties.  It also includes reminding the client to take their prescription medications. It does not include cutting of toenails or fingernails and changing dressings.

Kitchen Work

Grocery shopping, preparing menus and meals, cooking, baking, serving, assisting with eating, washing and drying dishes and general tidying up is included.

Qualifications:

  • At least one year of experience or CNA license
  • Background and/or FBI DOJ clearance 
  • Excellent communication and listening skills
  • Able to work in a stressful environment 
  • At least two positive professional references
  • Ability to work independently
  • Compassionate, patient and caring nature
  • Physically and mentally fit

General Notes:  The PCA will be required to maintain a safe working environment for themselves and their clients.  There may be emergency situations where the PCA will have to react quickly with sound judgment.  The scope of duties described in this document may not include all duties to be performed by the PCA and is subject to change.
